Historic Well #1 is getting an upgrade and a complete makeover to assure you have the water you need in the future

Located near School Street, right alongside the old water tower, is the Historic Well #1 of the Elk Grove Water Service. This well location served the community for over 118 years until it was shut down in 2005.

Starting in late June, it will be going through an upgrade so that it can once again provide water to the Old Town area.

First, the old well is being replaced to ensure that water will remain healthy and reliable for years to come. It will be housed in a specially designed building to keep it secure and to virtually eliminate any unwanted noise from disturbing the neighborhood.

This upgraded well site will provide a valuable fresh source for our new water treatment facility. It will help assure that there will be water when we need it.

A design that blends with the neighborhood.

The new building that will house Well #1 is designed to be both efficient and eco-friendly. It integrates a number of features to conserve energy.

It is important to us that our improvements compliment the Old Town area, and not create an "eye-sore" in your neighborhood. So, we plan to make the well building out of recycled clay bricks, with a recycled metal roof. And we are doing everything possible to preserve the old oak trees at the site.

Construction begins in June

We expect the construction period to extend through late Spring 2009. While we are doing everything possible to minimize any inconvenience, there will be some disruptions.

The impact should be about what you'd expect if one of your nearby neighbors did a remodel on their home.

The benefits to you

Adding this new source of water will stabilize the water levels during peak demand periods. This assures improved water pressures in the surrounding area. Plus it provides better fire protection for your home or business.

How will the School Street Well #1 construction affect me?

There are two key phases to the project. The first is the drilling of the new deep well. Once drilling starts, it will continue for 6-8 weeks. Some noise will be unavoidable.

The second phase is the construction of the new pump house building. This will occur during normal working hours, Monday-Friday. It is expected to be completed by late Spring 2009.

If your home directly adjoins the construction site and the drilling process is disturbing your sleep, contact District Engineer, Scott Myers, (916) 869-4957.

The Board and staff of Elk Grove Water Service thank you for your cooperation and patience. We're sure you'll enjoy the improved water quality this project brings.

The pump house design is eco-friendly and designed to fit with the look of the Old Town area.
