Elk Grove Water Service begins pipeline construction on Polhemus Drive
ELK GROVE, CA -- Construction crews have broken ground on Polhemus Drive as the Elk Grove Water System begins a key final component for the community's long-term water improvement program. Once completed, it will connect the Railroad Water Treatment Plant to the Northern portion of the district up through the Camden area.

Construction has started at the northern end of the new pipeline and will continue south to the key connection point near Elk Grove Boulevard and the Railroad tracks. Two-way traffic will be maintained where possible through the construction period.

"We have taken a number of steps to assure that we minimize the impact on resident's in the area," said Leo Havener, general manager of the Elk Grove Water Service. "These range from using a rolling construction strategy that limits the area directly affected, to steps to help preserve the road surface."

Richard Salas, EGWS' foreman on the project, developed one of these innovations. He located used, thick rubber conveyor belts that are now placed under the steel treads of the heavy equipment. This provides a stable platform for the equipment, but also prevents the road surface from being unnecessarily chewed-up.

Once completed, this water main will improve water pressures as well as deliver high-quality water to the area. It is one of the final phases of the multi-million dollar water improvement project that was begun in 2003. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, 2008.
